Tiefling Name Generator
Tieflings in D&D 5e use one of two naming traditions: an infernal or Mulhorandi first name inherited from their fiendish bloodline (Akmenos, Damaia, Kairon), or a "virtue name" — a single conceptual word their tiefling parents chose as aspiration or defiance (Hope, Torment, Creed, Art). Both traditions are canonical; this generator gives you a mix, with the Epic style combining both into "First Virtue" compound names.
Use this generator for D&D 5e tiefling PCs of any class, NPC tieflings in Waterdeep or Baldur's Gate, warlocks with fiendish patrons, and any character whose ancestry includes a bargain that didn't work out quite as planned.
Picking a tiefling name that tells a story
- Virtue names signal backstory. A tiefling named "Sorrow" has a family history. A tiefling named "Hope" has parents who refused to let the world define her.
- Infernal names hide in plain sight. "Mordai" or "Akmenos" read as foreign but mundane. Great for tieflings passing as human-ish.
- Combine them. The Epic style gives you a traditional first name plus a virtue: "Akmenos Torment."
