Pirate Name Generator

A great pirate name has three parts: the epithet everyone whispers ("One-Eyed," "Bloody," "Peg-Leg"), the common first name that keeps them human, and the surname that's half threat, half weather report. "One-Eyed" Jack Bonesworth. "Dread" Mary Kraken-Bane. You don't become a pirate, you earn a pirate name.

Use this generator for D&D seafaring campaigns, pirate-themed TTRPGs (7th Sea, Blood & Plunder), pirate-flavored NPCs in any fantasy setting, novels, and names for your ship's crew manifest. The Epic style always includes an epithet; Short gives clean "First Last" names for the less infamous.

Naming your crew

  • Captains get epithets, crewmates get last names. Only the famous earn a nickname that sticks.
  • Epithets describe a failure. "One-Eyed" means something happened. Good characters have a story for theirs.
  • Mix historical and invented. Real names (Jack, Mary, Henry) paired with made-up pirate surnames (Kraken-Bane, Bonesworth) feel grounded and legendary at once.
