Dragon Name Generator

Dragons don't get introduced — they announce themselves. A proper dragon name is a three-part spell: a prefix of color or element, a guttural root name, and an epithet that tells you what they've burned down. "Obsidian Vermithrax, the Sky-Shatterer." "Zaladrexis, the Bone-Hoarder."

Use this generator for D&D campaign bosses, the main antagonist of your fantasy novel, flavor text for a tabletop dragon's lair, or simply because you've been thinking about dragons again. Each generation combines dozens of adjectives, thirty-plus ancient-sounding roots, and epithets designed to intimidate.

Using dragon names in campaigns

  • The epithet carries the lore. "The Sun-Eater" implies a backstory players will want to investigate. Seed your plot with one.
  • NPCs should fear the name. Have townsfolk only say it in whispers. The DM move of refusing to speak the name aloud is a classic.
  • True name vs. common name. In many settings dragons hide their true name and use a lesser one. Generate two and use both.
